The 2020GreenEnergy Plan
The CEA Technology Program
The California Energy Agencies (CEA) will create and maintain an aggressive Technology Program
to acquire the best possible technologies for the California Energy Internet (CEInet)
for the generation, distribution, and extended large-scale storage of renewable energy.
The program will include, but not be limited to:
-
Technology Tracking, to take advantage of technology developed by others.
-
Research and Development that is not available from other sources.
Some activities may be done in-house, but most will be done under contract
or in partnership with private companies or other entities,
such as California’s world-class universities.
-
Technology Transfer, to spin off technology advancements into practical products,
many of which will become part of CEInet, and all of which will boost California’s economy.
-
Startup Support for appropriate new technology,
especially technology developed within California by Californians.
Several important areas of activity will include:
-
Energy Storage: Modular energy storage units of various sizes will be needed
by generating sites, routing centers, cities, neighborhoods, businesses,
and individual homeowners.
-
Power Electronics: CEInet will deal with many megawatts of power,
which must be efficiently routed, stored, released from storage,
converted from alternating current to direct current and back again,
and converted from one voltage level to another.
-
High-Temperature Superconductivity: CEInet will use
superconducting transmission lines cooled by liquid nitrogen or helium
flowing through their hollow interiors.
They will have virtually no electrical resistance,
and many of them will eventually carry tens of gigawatts
at a fraction of the voltages needed for conventional conductors,
and with a fraction of the energy loss.
Moreover, with D.C. transmission, made possible by modern power electronics,
electro-magnetic radiation (EMR) will no longer be a cause for concern.
